Randalstown close in but ’quins still leading

Randalstown II have moved to within three points of Harlequins II at the top of the Junior One table after a 3-1 win over Queen’s at Upper Malone on Saturday.

Vikki Milligan, Megan Quinn and Jayne McGrillen were putting the home defence under pressure from the start and that was rewarded when Kerry Coulter’s pass was converted by Milligan into the net after a rebound.

‘Town went into the break leading by that goal and as conditions continued to be difficult they knew Queen’s would battle to get back into the game.

But it was the visitors who made it 2-0 when a reverse stick shot from Jane McGrillen found the net after good work by Emma Clyde on the left.

Although Queen’s started to attack down the wings good defensive work by Emma Dunlop and Joanna Dodds kept them out.

But they did pull a goal back from open play to set up a grandstand finish to the game.

However the Randalstown girls responded quicky and decisively as Joanna McClurkin passed to Rebecca Quinn who deflected the ball to Jane McGrillen who shot into the corner of the goal to make it 3-1.

“Town kept up the pressure winning another short corner which was converted by Joanna Dodds making the final score 4-1.

Queens didn’t give up as they pressed forward but solid work by Kathryn McCullough and Becci Grant kept them at bay.

In the other games leaders Harlequins II went down 2-1 to Pegasus II and the Ulster Elks II beat Victorians II 3-1 with Armagh II defeating Ballymoney II 1-0 while Lurgan II and Lisnagarvey II drew 1-1.
