ARDS will be happier than Pegasus after Friday’s eagerly anticipated Premier League match at Upper Malone ended in a 1-1 draw.
The result ended Ards’ 100 per cent record but they still have a two point advantage over the champions as they took over top spot in the table although that could change today.
But Pegasus will be kicking themselves for squandering several chances, notably towards the end of both halves, and for conceding a late equaliser after apparently having the points in the bag.
There was just six minutes remaining when Janice Vaughan claimed the equaliser after Pegasus had dominated for long periods of the second half.
The first half won’t live long in the memory although both teams did have their chances, Becky Weir going close for Ards and Vanessa Surgeoner for Pegasus early on.
Surgeoner did have the ball in the net for Pegasus in the 24th minute but the ‘goal’ was ruled out for ‘backsticks’ and the striker was given a stern talking to by the umpire for her protests which went in vain.
Pegasus went in front in the 46th minute when their set-piece routine finally produced dividends, Surgeoner scoring with a cracking shot low into the net.
Eleven minutes later Suzanne Ferris set up Surgeoner but her shot flashed wide of the target as Pegasus remained in a degree of control.
But Ards scored out of the blue in the 64th minute when Vaughan got on the end of a free to steer the ball home with a first time shot.
The drama didn’t end there as Ferris rounded the Ards keeper only to be denied by a last ditch goal line clearance and then Surgeoner was denied by Ards ‘keeper Naomi McKnight before Brown’s corner went close.
In the other Premier League game Nikki Parke and Susie Sneddon each bagged a brace as Ballymoney crushed Armagh 8-1 at Ardmore.
