Wallace boys enjoy Dutch experience

WALLACE High School boys’ hockey 1st X1 squad have just returned from a successful tour to Holland during their half term break.

They played games against top Dutch clubs - drawing 0-0 against HGC and defeating the world famous Bloemendaal HC 9-3.

The game against Bloemendaal was an experience in many different ways.

Having arrived at the club on Sunday morning they were greeted by a pitch covered in snow which resulted in the first half being played on the adjacent grass pitch, a first for all the players but a trip down memory lane for coaches Erroll Lutton and Gareth Kidd.

The first half was real end to end stuff with both teams locked at three goals apiece before the Lisburn team pulled away during the second half on the by now cleared astro turf pitch.

For the record, the goal scorers were Daniel Nelson (4), Aaron Dumican (2), Jonny Dalton (2) and Mark Acheson.

Great Britain captain Barry Middleton and Great Britain international Becky Herbert took the boys for a coaching session at HGC on the final morning of the trip, this being the third occasion that Barry has coached Wallace pupils after initially being introduced by Iain Lewers.

Unfortunately the match that they had planned to watch between Bloemendaal and Amsterdam was abandoned during the first half due to a flooded pitch - the only downside to what was otherwise a very successful trip.

Last Saturday the team played Cookstown High School in the McCullough Cup and they deservedly ran out 7-2 winners.

Daniel Nelson continued his excellent tour form with another hat-trick, whilst co captain Ross Kelly scored two well taken drag flicks. Mark Acheson and Ryan Getty were the other scorers which leaves Wallace needing to defeat Banbridge Academy 2nd X1 in their final group game to progress to the semi finals.
