Ian McClure aiming for New Year glory

Portrush bowler Ian McClure

Portrush bowler Ian McClure

Ian McClure will aim to enhance his impressive CV when he features in the AIIB Specsavers National Triples Championship at Parkgate early in the New Year.

The Irish international returned from the world outdoor championships in Austrailia in November with yet another medal, having picked up a bronze in the fours discipline.

McClure, representing the newly named Ballybrakes Community Stadium, will now focus on adding to his collection of indoor silverware.

He will team up with Stephen Falls and Nigel Robinson for what will be a difficult semi final meeting with the Belfast combination, Stephen Gibson, John McCullough and Mike Merrritt on Saturday, January 5, (9.30am).

Gibson, who is scheduled to make his Ireland debut in the 2013 Home Indoor Internationals at Stanley in March, is guaranteed a busy few days in the national showcase event, having qualified in singles, triples and fours.

His challenge begins in the latter on Friday, December 4 (6.30pm), teaming up with his Belfast colleagues, Michael Bickerstaff, Stephen Hedley and Clifford Craig for what promises to be a mouth-watering semi final outing against John Nicholl, Rod Coleman, Michael Nutt and Jim Baker, from the host club.

Gibson will then feature in the blue riband event – the national singles – against County Antrim’s John Nicholl on Saturday afternoon.

However, hovering ominously in the other tie is the current title holder Mark McPeak, who will attempt to reach his third successive final – he will face his Belfast and Ireland international colleague Simon Martin.

But before that semi final shoot-out, McPeak will be in action in the pairs. He teams up with Stuart Bennett – he is also in line for his first Irish cap – for a morning meeting with County Antrim’s Trevor Robinson and Andy Kyle.
