ICE HOCKEY: Belfast Giants face tough task in Challenge Cup second leg

Yesterday’s first leg was tied at 2-2 after two periods with Trevor Hendrikx and Ryan Russell on target for the hosts and James Desmarais and David Rutherford getting Belfast’s replies.

Kris Beech fired home the third goal for the Giants but Guillaume Doucet, Leigh Salters and Joey Haddad netted to put the Devils in pole position for the return leg at the SSE Arena in Belfast on Tuesday, 23 February.

Giants surrendered a two-goal lead in Sheffield on Saturday as they went down 4-2 to the Steelers.

Craig Peacock scored after only 12 seconds and Darryl Lloyd netted on the powerplay at 21:41 to double the Giants advantage.

Jonathan Phillips pulled a goal back short-handed at 35:49 and Guillaume Desbiens tied the game at two (42:18).

Tyler Mosienko’s powerplay goal edged the hosts ahead at 47:57 and Jason Hewitt wrapped the game up with an empty-net goal (59:59).
