Lydia Kelly defied the pain barrier at the weekend to win her first tournament in the Republic of Ireland as she claimed the U16 singles title at the prestigious Brookfield event in Dublin.

The 14-year-old Windsor player – who was seeded second – upset the odds as she overcame Bangor teenager Amy Rothwell, who was ranked top in a hard fought battle which went the distance.

After two hours on court the Methodist College student came out on top on a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 scoreline.

After the match she revealed that a niggly leg injury had hampered her during the final.

“I did well to deal with the fact I had a very sore knee throughout the match which made it more difficult to serve.” she explained.

“But you have deal with these things and get on with it.

“I’m working hard at my game and looking forward to the rest of the tournaments coming up.

“I have won a lot of tournaments in Ulster and this is my first down south. It was a tough week because I had two late matches and then early starts travelling to Dublin.

“I only had a quick 10-minute hit before the final because of the early start but I got the job done.

“I have to thank my coach Przemek Stec, he really believes in me even though I frustrate him some times when I don’t play the way he knows I can.

“It’s a good start to the Spring-Summer tournaments for me but my main focus is improving my game, never mind the results. and as long as I do that Przemek will be happy.

Meanwhile, Ciara Hill claimed a hat-trick of titles at the inaugural Lisburn Junior Open finals at sun splashed Hilden..

The Ward Park club member lifted the Under 12 and U14 trophies and then completed the treble when she shared success in the U14 doubles decider, completing an impressive performance during the event.
