Christine McMahon placed eighth in her 400 metres semi final at the European Athletics Championships in Zurich but for the second time ran very close to her personal best.

She was drawn in lane 7 in by far the strongest semi including favourite Elidh Child. Christine fought hard but was tiring as they came into the straight and she came eighth in 57.31.

She would have needed to knock almost a second off her best to reach the final but has done really well in her first Europeans. Child won the semi with 54.71.

Waterford girl Kelly Proper was fifth in her 200 semi in 23.15.

Tonight’s action is the Groomsport Half Marathon and 10K. The half marathon is the ninth and penultimate round of the Pure Running / ChampionChip Ireland Series.

Don Travers is the defending champion and could score again with Richard Coey, Gareth Grew, Mark Walker and Thomas Leitch all expected to take high places. Nigel Grier will lead the M50’s.

Heather Foley is the athlete in form after victories in Cookstown, Loughry and Ballinderry. She will be hot favourite if she competes.

The action starts from Groomsport Marina at 7 o’clock.
