Twelve local athletes have been selected for the Irish team which is competing in the Schools International at Cardiff on July 19.

The brilliant Megan Marrs from Stratherne who took two golds in the Irish Juniors at Cork is in the 100m and 4x100m relay and should take medals in both.

It will be a family affair with brother Robbie chosen for the high jump after clearing 1.81 to win the Ulster Schools before taking the Irish crown with 1.85.

Record-breaking discus thrower Andrew Barkley from Belfast High will be among the favourites. Ben Fisher from Methody is in the long jump with Jack Magee of Ballyclare High and Michael Gaffney from Campbell selected for javelin.

On the track Craig Newell of Larne Grammar is in the 200m and relay events, Oisin O’Callaghan of Abbey Newry competes at 800m and relay with Ciaran Barnes of Belfast High in the 400 hurdles.

Toni Moore from Sacred Heart Omagh runs in the Steeplechase, Lydia Mills of Ballyclare High goes at triple jump with Sommer Lecky (Strabane Academy) in the high jump, who won both Ulster and Irish Schools titles at junior level.

As always England will be favourites but the locals competitors almost all Ulster champions will certainly have medal chances.

Meanwhile, the local action on Friday night is at Killough in Co Down with the Shore 10K Road Race which starts from Main Street at 7.30pm.

Murlough AC athletes are strongly represented with Orangegrove, Dromore, Ballydrain, North Down, Seapark and Newcastle all expected to go well. Olivia Diamond from Balmoral can be top junior.
