ONE of the biggest and best local road races returns to the Co Tyrone village of Beragh next Month.

Over the past number of years, the Beragh 5 has built up a reputation as one of the best all abilities running events in Ulster, with upwards on 500 people regularly taking part.

Hundreds of people of all ages and abilities are expected to descend on St Mary’s GAA Pavilion on Saturday April 9 2016, for the village’s popular five mile road race and 5K fun run/walk.

Last year’s five mile race saw Kenyan athlete Vincent Kiprotich finish in 24:51, shaving more than one minute off the course record set by Omagh Harriers’ Stephen Duncan in 2014. Fellow Kenyan Selinah Kangogo won the 2015 women’s five mile race in a time of 30:24.

Some of Ireland’s top elite short distance runners are expected to line out once again for the firing pistol at noon April 9 for the fully chip-timed event.

Several hundred walkers and runners are also expected for the popular 5K route, which will also feature the best in local underage running talent.

Race co-ordinator Adrian Donnelly has encouraged both walkers and runners of all ages and abilities to take part.

“The five mile route offers reasonable challenge to compete with the best runners in the local area. But every year we are delighted by the large numbers of people and families who take to our scenic 5K route,” he said.

“At its heart, the Beragh 5 remains a community event, and we look forward to welcoming everyone on April 9.”

Beragh GAA club chairman High McNamee has expressed his thanks to all the sponsors who have pledged their support for the event.

Main sponsors for the 2016 Beragh 5 are SSE, Cathcart’s Centra, McGarrity Bros Ltd, Donnelly Brothers Contracts Ltd and Tyrone Form Work.

“The generosity of our sponsors help our dedicated volunteers make the Beragh 5 a hugely successful annual community event. As always, we look forward to welcoming hundreds of people to St Mary’s Park on April 9.”

The designated charity for this year’s Beragh 5 is Aware, the only mental health charity in the North working exclusively for those with depression and bipolar disorder.
