This May bank holiday, Craigavon will see thousands of young footballers, parents, coaches and supporters descend into the Borough for the first ever year of the ‘Craigavon Cup’.
The tournament is for under-seven to under-12 teams and will be played throughout the day at Gordon Playing Fields with the grand finale taking place at Mourneview – the home of Glenavon Football Club.
Organised through ‘Playing for the Future’ – a football academy that brings communities together through sport – the Craigavon Cup, sponsored by McDonald’s, was launched recently at Mourneview and promises to be a thrilling day of football that will see players coming from all over the country to participate.
The Mayor of Craigavon, Councillor Mark Baxter, said: “I am known as a big football fan anyway and was delighted to help Playing for the Future to get this project off the ground.
“It is very exciting to be bringing thousands of children together for a common goal and it is guaranteed to be a very exciting day and a very worthy occasion.”
Thomas McStravick from Playing for the Future added: “This is a very exciting year for football and for Craigavon. It is a huge undertaking but one that we know will bring communities together and we are thrilled with the response so far.
“Football is a fantastic way of breaking down barriers and the Craigavon Cup will be a spectacle to remember and we hope that all participants will thoroughly enjoy the day.”
