Disappointment for Kris Meeke at Rally Italy

There was yet more disappointment for Kris Meeke in the FIA World Rally Championship.

Meeke was a casualty on the fifth special stage of Rally Italy as he stopped his works Citroen five kilometres from the end of the test.

The suspicion was that the battery warning light that came on at the end of the previous special stage had turned into some more serious and had brought his rally to a premature end.

Once again it was another rally win for Sebastien Ogier and the VW works team.

Meanwhile, international rally driver Robert Barrable won the Irish Formula Ford Festival at Mondello Park in a car he rented for the event.

Earlier in the day he won his heat while the other heat winner Kevin O’Hara driving an Ulster built Crossle car challenged Barrable all the way in the Festival final.

Round four of the 2014 McGrady Insurance MSA ANICC Northern Ireland Stage Rally Championship took place on the Modern Tyre Service Mourne Rally.

Forty-seven cars entered the event, the last being a late entry from championship challenger Alan Carmichael and Derek McGarrity was driving his third different car in four rounds, an R4 specification Mitsubishi Evo , but the change did not seem to phase the championship leader and he swept into the lead on stage eight and on to victory.

There is now a summer break before round five of the McGrady Insurance MSA NI Rally Championship on the Ulster National Rally in August and it is looking ever more likely that McGarrity is heading towards a record fifth Northern Ireland Championship title, but anything can happen over the two days of closed road tarmac on the Ulster.
