Amy Foster was disappointed to come eighth in her semi-final of the 100 metres in the European Athletics Championships at Zurich.

Amy started well but faded after 40 metres as the power of the opposition came through leaving her in eighth place with a time of 11.79,

She would have needed to have run 11.24 well below her Northern Ireland record of 11.40 to make the final. Her semi was won by Myryam Soumara from France ahead of GBs Ashleigh Nelson.

Christine McMahon made up for Commonwealth Games disappointment by qualifying for the semi-finals of the 400 hurdles after a dramatic heat.

She was drawn in the fifth lane then had to endure a false start when Sara Petersen of Denmark was disqualified. She had the fancied Hanna Ryzhykova of Ukraine just outside.

Christine started well gaining ground on the athletes in the adjoining lanes. She was second coming into the straight as Vera Barbosa of Portugal led. Ryzhykova then challenged very strongly before falling heavily at the last hurdle.

The Ulster girl done well to avoid her and went on to finish third in 57.16 just outside her best as Barbosa won from Petra Fontanive of Switzerland.

The semi-finals will be today at 5.10.

Thomas Barr from Ferrybank in Waterford who had been tipped for a medal came third in his semi-final of the mens 400 hurdles in 49.30 which was not fast enough to qualify.
