Levi Nelson scored twice to help Sheffield Steelers climb to the top of the Elite League after a 5-2 victory over Fife Flyers.

With title rivals Cardiff and Nottingham not in action on Saturday, the Steelers took full advantage at the Sheffield Arena with Fredrik Vestberg, Robert Dowd and Tyler Mosienko also getting on the scoresheet while Nico Sacchetti bagged a brace for Fife.

Belfast Giants’ hopes of finishing top were dealt a blow as they fell to a 2-1 defeat at home to Braehead Clan.

Brendan Brooks and Alex Leavitt grabbed the goals which saw third-placed Giants’ six-game winning run come crashing to a halt, with Chris Higgins’ third-period goal merely consolation for Belfast.

Elsewhere, Coventry Blaze scored seven goals in the first period as they ran out resounding 12-4 winners against Edinburgh Capitals.
