Instonians’ James Corry will win his first Senior Cap after he was called into the Irish squad, which will play World number 8, Spain, in a three game tour in Terrassa from 7-16 January.

Annadale’s Michael Robson has also got the nod from the Irish selectors and he also makes the trip to Spain.

John Jackson (Reading) is likely to be handed the captaincy, with Drew Carlisle (Banbridge) and Peter Brown (UCD) making up the Ulster contingent.

Of the seventeen players named by the interim Irish coach, Mick McKinnon’s squad, nine players are uncapped, with at least 12 senior players unable to make the trip for various reasons.

Commenting on the tour, McKinnon said “It’s an inexperienced squad but a great opportunity for these players to push themselves into the frame for tournament selection.

“We have a number of players unavailable due to a combination of reasons, injury, exams and work but this provides a chance for these guys who have been working hard in regional and national camps to show what they can do on the international stage.

“This trip is the first step in creating further depth in the squad, which in turn will create the necessary competition for places to drive us forward,” he continued.
