Armagh’s Joe Beattie will look to enhance his reputation in the Sport Mat Player’s Tour when he features in the prestigious English Masters at Bromsgrove Indoor Bowls Club over the weekend.

The Ireland international goes into the tournament in the best possible shape, having won the Swedish Masters at Stromstad earlier this month.

Beattie defeated fellow country Mark Beattie - no relation - in the final on that occasion. Both players will now be joined by another healthy entry from this side of the Irish Sea with no fewer than 25 players travelling over the event, sponsored by Henselite.

“It’s quite an impressive representation,” said Tour director Phil Mills. “The English Masters has proved to be a very success event and the ‘house full’ signs were up for quite some time.

“The competition will be played on a round-robin basis, starting with 18 groups of six players. The winners when then go into the knock-out phase.

“Joe Beattie won the event last year, of course. I’m sure he will be determined to make a successful defence. In fact, his victory in the Swedish Masters was this third overall SMPT success because he also picked up the UK Open title earlier this season.

“So it has all the makings of another fantastic tournament and, I’m sure there will be quite a few players wanted to take over Joe’s crown.”

Beattie was pulled out of the hat in Group A, along with his follow countrymen, Don McNamara and Pat Garvey. Mark Beattie is joined by Kevin McAloan in Group F.

The other Ireland competitors are: Norman Noble, Seamus McGillion (Group B); Cecil Dillon, Niall Cox and David Graham (C); Alan Graham (D), Pat Garvey (E); Michael McGrade (I); Gary Burke (J); Lisa Douglas (K); Tony Ward (L); Gerry McNabb and Pauline Beattie - Joe’s wife - (M); Jal Richardson (N); Paul Noble, Stuart McSorley (o); Jack Moffatt, William Boggs jnr, Barry Brannigan (P) and Ivor Armstrong (Q).
