Jonny Steede continued his domination of the Northern Ireland Mountain Racing Championship with an impressive victory at the Spelga Skyline race.

The win over the 12.5-miles course, which covered nine peaks with 1500 feet of climb, was his fifth in the series, although he was given a good chase this time by Seamus Lynch.

From the start it was Steede, Lynch and David Steele ahead of Neil Carty, Deon McNeilly and Dale Mathers. Steede then began to apply the pressure and opened a small gap.

The Ladies race was missing the athletes selected for the Snowdon International but Violet Linton was going strongly ahead of Denise Mathers at this stage.

Steede kept the pace up to come back to the finish with over a minute in hand over Lynch. Steele just out-sprinted Carty for third with McNeilly and Clive Bailey the top six.

The women’s positions reversed in the second half with Denise Mathers crossing the line clear of Violet Linton.

Meanwhile, Fergus McGirr won the Lisbellaw 10k in Co Fermanagh.

The Enniskillen runner was 58 seconds in front of Shane Brody with Derek Somerville in third.

Helen Stockdale from Finn Valley had a runaway success in the women’s race which she took by five minutes from Karen Dolan and Mary Rutledge.

It was double success for the Orangegrove Club at the Greyabbey 10k as John Craig and Jenny Blair took the major honours.

John came home ahead of a determined Barrie Atkinson and James Trainor while Jenny was in a class of her own as she crossed the line well clear of Amanda Perry and Maeve Lavery.

Kerry O’Flaherty, running for WSEH, led all the way to win the 2000m steeplechase in the Premier British League in a new best of 6:34.20 to earn a great boost before the Commonwealth Games.

Two more Commonwealth hopefuls were in action in the men’s premier class. Jason Harvey clocked a season’s best of 50.79 to win the 400 hurdles while Leon Reid came second in the 100 with 10.74.
