McKeowns steal the show at Ballybrakes event

Young Adam McKeown wrote himself into the record books by becoming the youngest ever winner of the prestigious Ballybrakes Community Indoor Bowls Club’s Christmas Short Mat pairs tournament sponsored by Taylor Bowls and Basil Knipe Electrics, Ballymoney.

The 13 year old was partnered by his 19 year old brother Ryan and the Mossley boys roared to an impressive 9-7 win over John Kennedy and Keith McCullagh, from Largy, in an epic final.

And, just to prove it wasn’t a freak result, the McKeown brothers dumped out last year’s winners, David Peden and Paul Reid, from Ballinderry, in the semis! It wasn’t all doom and gloom for Kennedy, however, because he dusted himself down after that defeat to beat Ballylennon’s John Quinn in the singles final.

The game turned in the Largy man’s favour on the eighth end, when he picked up a count of three to go four ahead; it was good enough to earn him the title.

“The tournament was a great success with the entries greatly increased, which proves the club is getting back on track after a fall in numbers in recent years,” said Donna McCloy.

“With Tommy and Anne Smith at the helm, they ensured the competition was run in an efficient manner and the club are indebted to them for the hours of work they put in.”

The singles section qualifiers were: Fiona McDermott (Largy), John Kennedy (Largy), Andy Morrison (1st Ahoghill), Aaron Tennent (St Colman’s, Dervock), John Quinn (Ballylennon), Neil Mulholland (St Joseph’s, Lisburn), Pauline Beattie (St Mark’s, Portadown), Joe Beattie (St Mark’s, Portadown), Liam McHugh (Cookstown Parochial), Martin McAleese (St Colman’s, Dervock) and Scott Jess (Ballinderry.
