Former international Michael Watt lifted the Men’s Singles 40 title in the Roadside Motors Ulster Masters.
Watt defeated John Kiernan 21-4 21-11 but having taken Irish Masters Men’s Doubles champions Eugene McKenna and Graham Henderson to 21-19 in the third set after nigh on 70 minutes play just over a month ago, Watt still feels aggrieved that with Michael Turkington they had not been able to wrestle away the doubles title too.
But when Henderson and McKenna dealt with Paul Devlin and Stephen Galway efficiently 21-16 21-16, when it came to Turkington and Watt’s opportunity to progress they were to be pegged back and taken to 21-16 19-21 21-19 in nigh on an hour, so it was no great surprise when Henderson and McKenna added the doubles title in just over half an hour 21-7 21-11.
Henderson partnered Doreen McClements to a 21-17 21-12 win over Aubrey Cox and Pam Peard in he mixed doubles 50 competition while Peard had won the women’s doubles 40 with Christine Graham.
The mixed doubles 40 saw Michael Turkington partnering Valerie Martin lift the title with a 21-12 22-20 victory over Willie Stevenson and Sylvia Campion, though they didn’t have things all their own way when they were taken to three sets by Jeffrey and Jackie Kearon in the round robin section.
