The Belfast Giants suffered play-off agony last night as the lost out to the Nottingham Panthers in the quarter-finals.

After losing the first leg 4-3, the Giants lost 3-1 at the SSE Arena to go out 7-4 on aggregrate.

Giants thought they were level on aggregate when James Desmarais fired in a rebound, but the officials had already blown the whistle.

Panthers took the lead as Andy Bohmbach broke away and cut inside David Rutherford to go backhand top shelf (18:06) past Stephen Murphy.

Evan Mosey converted a penalty shot short-handed when the Giants were penalised for a thrown stick (30:25).

Chris Lawrence made it 3-0 on the night and 7-3 on aggregate (32:29).

Belfast player-coach Derrick Walser lifted netminder Murphy for the extra skater to turn a powerplay into a six-on-four advantage, but Nottingham held firm.

Colin Shields broke Miika Wiikman’s shutout at 59:46 but Panthers progressed.

to the final four for the first time since they won it in 2013.
