Coleraine’s Alan Campbell cruised through the men’s single sculls heats as the Rio 2016 rowing got under way in Copacabana on Saturday.

The first sportsperson from Northern Ireland to compete at four Olympic Games, the 33-year-old started his campaign at the Lagoa on Saturday morning.

Campbell was the first rower from the United Kingdom in action and eased into Tuesday’s quarter-final, winning his heat in 7 minutes 8.31 seconds.

Meanwhile, Coleraine’s Peter Chambers was part of the men’s four lightweight men’s four which included Chris Bartley, Mark Aldred, Jono Clegg placed second in their heat.
