PARALYMPICS: Jason Smyth delighted to capture his fifth Paralympic gold medal

JASON Smyth said it was '˜an incredible feeling' after he stormed to victory in the T13 100m Final at the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janiero this afternoon.

The ‘Eglinton Flyer’ clinched his fifth paralympic gold medal and Team Ireland’s first of the 2016 games when he crossed the line, comfortably in first place, in a time of 10.64 seconds.

Smyth, who completed a ‘double, double’ of gold medals at the London Paralympics in 2012 following his T13 100m and 200m golds in Beijing.

The partially-sighted, dubbed the Usain Bolt of the Paralympic Games, however, won’t get the chance to complete another memorable double in the Brazilian capital as his favoured T13 200m isn’t on the list of events at this year’s Games.

“I was just glad that I was the first person to cross the line,” said Smyth. “It’s just incredible.

“This is my third Paralympic Games and my fifth gold medal. It’s a bit like a fairytale. I keep coming to these championships wondering when the fairytale is going to end.

“I knew I was capable of a faster time. I have run quicker than these guys and I should be beaten them if I can put things together.

“Thankfully I was the first man across the line.”
