Paul Pollock and Eddie McGinley lead a star studded entry for Wednesday night’s Powerade Queen’s 5K Road Race Round The River.

The event consists of two laps around a very fast flat course comprising the Annadale and Ormeau Embankments and the Kings and Ormeau Bridges.

Pollock will start favourite if he has recovered from his magnificent run at the World Half Marathon Championships in Copenhagen where he smashed the Northern Ireland record with 62 minutes 09.

He won the Lisburn and Ards races last year and showed plenty of speed when he clinched the senior 5,000 metres title at the Mary Peters Track.

McGinley comes to the venue after his brilliant victory at Omagh where he ran a perfectly timed tactical race to haul in long term leader Gary Murray.

Former Northern Ireland silver medallist Andrew Agnew, Irish Under 23 champion Ryan McDermott and Scott Rankin will also be prominent in the event won by Stephen Scullion last year.

There will be top juniors in action also with Andrew Wright of Willowfield and Ulster and Irish U15 and U16 champion Christy Conlon of Beechmount expected to perform well.

Teamwise Annadale who can pick from Pollock, McGinley, Agnew, McDermott and Phair should retain their title.

Ann Marie McGlynn of Lifford the winner of the Waterside race will start favourite in the ladies. She is the reigning 800 metres champion on the track and competed in the European Cross Country.

Masters champion Natasha Adams also Lifford, Julie Murphy, Judi Graham, Helen Stockdale and Gerrie Short should all place highly along with top juniors Emma Laverty and Toni Buchanan. Holders Lagan Valley and Lifford can dispute the team.

There are big numbers entered from all the Queen’s Universities Clubs. The prize list is £1,600 plus covering all the main groups plus the top students.

The headquarters are at the Queen’s PE Centre with the race starting on the Annadale Embankment at 7pm.
