RACHEL Mulligan has been ruled out of the Queen’s side to face Loreto in Saturday’s Irish Senior Cup first round clash in Dublin.
The Irish international striker suffered a recurrence of a quad injury meaning she played only for four minutes during the Chilean Cup competition in Cork this week.
Queen’s will be hoping to build upon a very successful Intervarsities campaign when they return south again on Saturday.
The students reached the final only to lose 4-0 to a very strong UCD team including a host of Irish internationals.
On the way to the showpiece they beat local rivals University of Ulster, who play in the Premier league as the Elks.
“We were very pleased with how the less experienced players team performed and many of our regular first teamers also produced some excellent performances over the weekend,” said Queen’s coach Simon Bell.
“To get to the Chilean Cup semi-final was a bonus for us and to defeat a strengthened UU side in the semi-final was a bit of a surprise result which was down to some excellent defending and goalkeeping in the second half.
“In the final we played UCD, who are probably the best side in Ireland at the moment, and had all their Irish internationals available.
“Although we eventually lost 4-0 we were very pleased with how girls played and they will have learnt a lot from the whole tournament and from that game in particular.”
