Kris Meeke lies in second place after the first day of Rallye Deutschland.
Meeke – driving a Citroen DS3 – finished 37 seconds behind leader Jari-Matti Latvala of Finland.
The Ulsterman has a 5.6-second advantage over Spain’s Dani Sordo, who is third after the opening six stages of the rally.
There were few surprises yesterday as the works Volkswagen Polos set the pace in the hands of the reigning World Rally Champion Sebastien Ogier and team-mate Latvala, and it was Meeke who provided the challenge for the works Citroen team slotting into third place behind the two Polos.
Ogier stamped his authority on the opening special stage by setting the fastest time – he was to repeat that on stages two and four with Latvala taking stages three and five.
However, stage six was to prove unlucky for rally leader Ogier as he went off into the vines.
Latvala swept to another best time with Meeke suddenly in second place overall.
