A squad of four RYA NI Youth sailors have successfully competed at the Laser Radial Youth Europeans in Denmark this week, performing well amongst 200 other sailors from over 25 countries.

Liam Glynn, Sorcha Donnelly and Sarah Eames from Ballyholme Yacht Club and Laura Gilmore from Strangford Lough Yacht Club, had just finished their GCSEs and AS Levels when they travelled straight to the Championships.

The team made a solid start to the International season with Liam Glynn, who won the Topper Worlds last year, finishing 29th overall (5th U17) at his first major Laser Regatta.

Sarah Eames, who is preparing to represent Ireland at the ISAF Youth Worlds in Portugal later this month, also made a significant step forward from last year, finishing 30th in the Girls fleet.

Laura Gilmore finished 41st and Sorcha Donnelly was 28th (7th U17).

Congratulating the squad, Richard Honeyford, RYA NI’s Performance Manager, said:

“The four squad sailors have all performed well, particularly as it is the first major event for three of them in the Laser Class. This reflects the hard work and training the sailors have put in over the winter and especially over the exam period; balancing revision with training on the water and in the gym!”

Liam, Sorcha and Laura will join fellow Youth Squad members, Tim Brow, Gary Fekkes and Suzanne Flannigan at the Laser Radial Youth Worlds in Poland later this month and they will then travel back as a team to the UK Laser Nationals in Largs, Scotland, in August.

Meanwhile, sailors Matt McGovern and Ryan Seaton are getting ready to embark on their 49er European title bid in Finland next week.

The RYANI Youth Squad is selected each Autumn and sailors receive training, advice and support through the remainder of the year. Previous squad members include James Espey, Matt McGovern and Ryan Seaton, who all competed at London 2012 and are campaigning for Rio 2016.
