Sprinter Amy Foster makes progress into semi-finals

Amy Foster qualified for the semi-finals of the 100 metres in the European Track and Field Championships in Zurich but there was disappointment for Jason Harvey in the 400 meters hurdles.

Amy, also a semi-finalist in the Commonwealth Games, was drawn in a very strong heat which included Dutch record holder Daine Schippers.

She started very quickly and was in contention until half way before fading slightly in the closing stages to finish fifth just outside automatic qualifying.

Amy clocked 11.50 the same as the fourth placer Lina Grincikaite of Lithuania but was able to progress as one of the fastest losers. Schippers won in 11.10 ahead of young English star Desiree Henry. Phil Healy the other Irish girl just missed out after running 11.53 in her heat.

Jason Harvey was drawn in the awkward inside lane in the 400 hurdles. He started well and was battling for fourth entering the straight before dropping back to finish seventh in 51.91.

He seems to be suffering from the ankle injury that slowed him in the Commonwealths.

Irish team mate Thomas Barr one of the title favourites looked very easy as he came first in his heat with 49.79.

Mark English from Letterkenny another of the big medal hopes easily won his 800 metres heat easing up in 1 minute 47.38 the fastest of all the qualifiers.
