Track season ready for take-off with Open Meeting

The local track season opens on Tuesday night at the Bangor Sportsplex when North Down AC promote their Open Meeting at the Old Belfast Road venue.

The competition provides an excellent opportunity for athletes to find out how their winter preparation has gone.

The promoting club are expected to be prominent with Brendan McConville, Tom Reynolds and Rachel Gibson all expected to compete while Andrew Agnew and Owen Carleton from Annadale will be the competitors to watch in the 3,000.

Registration is from 6.15pm and the timetable is: 7pm – 150m and high jump, 7.15pm – long jump and javelin, 7.30pm – 600m, 7.50pm – 3,000m, 8pm – discus and 8.10pm – 300m. All for men and women. Races will be graded according to personal bests.

Meanwhile, Glen Phair scored another victory at the Gortin 10K.

The Annadale Strider was almost a minute clear of James Brown with Michael Murphy and Derek Sommerville next.

The ladies race went to Pauline McGurren ahead of Ita Kelly and Marie McNulty.
