Ulster Senior Championship appears to be in safe hands

The most prestigious tournament on the local tennis calendar, the Ulster Senior Championship, looks set to have an extended partnership with it’s sponsor.

It’s understood that the Keys Finance Group is poised to confirm that it will be continuing it’s backing of the event for a further two years.

And that signals terrific news for the Boat Club which used to be a mecca for top players from all over Europe and further afield.

Among the names that are inscribed on the role of honour are the likes of Pedro Rodriguex, Tom Okker, Jeremy Bates and Tom Okker all of whom competed on the Grand Slam circuit.

In those heady days, big prize money was an understandable attraction but, until this year, when Keys Finance stepped in, the south Belfast club had been unable to provide much of a prize fund due to a lack of sponsorship.

But with an extension, and possibly a bigger deal likely to be on the table over the next two years, it is hoped that an even bigger and better entry will be attracted to the showpiece.

The tournament went like clockwork thanks to the hard work of Director Chris Sanlon and his team and even the rain during the early part of finals day didn’t spoil the action as Przemek Stec and Lucy Octave lifted the two main prizes in what was a great advert for local tennis.
