Manx rider Dean Martin killed following crash in practice for Pre-TT Classic Races

Manx rider Dean Martin has died following an incident during practice for the Pre-TT Classic races at the Billown circuit on the Isle of Man on Friday evening.

Mr Martin was 58 and hailed from Santon on the island.

He was involved in an accident during a practice session for the 850cc class at Billown Dip. A second rider involved, Jamie O’Brien from Liverpool, has been flown to Aintree Hospital in Liverpool where his condition is described as ‘serious but stable’.

Two course marshals were also caught up in the incident. One sustained head injuries and is also being treated at Aintree Hospital.

The second marshal, a retired competitor, suffered ankle and shoulder injuries but is expected to be released from Nobles Hospital in Douglas later on Saturday.

The Southern 100 Club, organisers of the event, said Mr Martin was a long time competitor on the Billown course, who leaves a partner, Hilary.

In a statement, the club said: “Southern 100 Racing extends it sincere condolences to family, relatives and friends at this very sad time.

“The organisers are carrying out a full investigation into the circumstances of the incident. The Coroner of Inquests has been informed.”

Practice and racing continues on Saturday, with the main race programme taking place on Monday.

Northern Ireland’s William Dunlop is among the riders participating in the event, with the Ballymoney man in action on the 350cc Davies Motorsport Honda.
