Newly crowned Irish Motorcyclist of the Year Eugene Laverty will make a special guest appearance at next month’s Adelaide Blackhorse Motorcycle Festival in Belfast.

The Northern Ireland rider received the prestigious Joey Dunlop trophy at his home in Monaco after beating off stiff opposition from Isle of Man TT star Michael Dunlop to win the top accolade at the annual awards bash on January 17.

Laverty will officially open the three-day show - organised by Billy Nutt of Nutt Promotions for the 19th year - at the King’s Hall on Friday, February 7.

The Toomebridge man won nine World Superbike races on the factory Aprilia RSV4 last season, eventually finishing as the runner-up to Kawasaki’s Tom Sykes in the final standings.

Laverty has switched to Paul Denning’s Crescent Suzuki team for 2014 with MCE British Superbike champion Alex Lowes as his team-mate.

The 27-year-old faces a significant challenge to turn the Yoshimura-powered GSX-R1000 into a race winner, but both Laverty and Lowes have featured at the top of the time sheets during the pre-season test at Portimao in Portugal, raising expectations ahead of the opening World Superbike round of 2014 at Phillip Island in Australia.

The Adelaide Blackhorse Motorcycle Festival was launched in Belfast last Tuesday morning, when details of the popular event were announced in front of assembled media and special guests including Michael Rutter, Alastair Seeley and Martin Barr.

All the major manufacturers will be represented at the show, with the latest machines from Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki, Ducati, Suzuki, Harley Davidson, Triumph, KTM, Victory and Indian on display.

The festival takes place at the King’s Hall from Friday, February 7 until Sunday, February 9. Opening hours are 2pm-10pm on Friday and 10am-5pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Live TV coverage of the event will be streamed online at www.motorcyclefest.tv.
