Michael Laverty endured a frustrated day as the first MotoGP test of 2014 commenced yesterday at Sepang in Malaysia.
The PBM rider only completed 14 laps after a mix-up over Brembo brake calipers and engine trouble, eventually finishing 25th out of 26 riders on the time sheets.
“We messed about and did a few in and out laps, then found a brake set-up that worked okay - but I got one lap and the engine stopped,” said Laverty, who is using last year’s engine.
“There’ll be some tough competition in the ‘Open’ series this year. Hopefully Aprilia can bring us something a little faster.”
Defending world champion Marc Marquez headed the times on the Repsol Honda by half a second from Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi with Dani Pedrosa and Jorge Lorenzo the top four.
Aleix Espargaro was the quickest Open class rider in seventh place on the Forward Racing FTR-M1 Yamaha.
