The organisers of the Donegal International Rally have confirmed that Michael Dunlop has entered the event – ending several months of rumour and speculation.
Fresh from his record breaking four TT wins, becoming the first rider to win four TTs in consecutive years when he secured his first success in the blue-riband Senior TT event on the Isle of Man event last week.
He will be switching from two wheels to four wheels to make his debut behind the wheel of a 300bhp Ford Escort, partnered by local co-driver James McNulty.
“We have hoped for a long time this would come off and we can not wait to see Michael tackle the classic special stages like Knockalla and Atlantic Drive.
“He will be going a lot slower than he usually does but we think he will enjoy it as much as we shall enjoy having him here,” commented Brian Brogan, Chairman Donegal Motor Club.
One driver who is delighted with the news is Tarmac Rally Champion and Donegal Rally winner Garry Jennings.
“I am really thrilled that Michael will be on the start line in Donegal next weekend. While we will not be in the same class I will be looking for his stage times just like everybody else.
“He is untouchable in road racing and a hero to so many of us. Rallying will be new to him so I just hope he enjoys himself. He has nothing to prove about speed and so much to adjust to in a very different sport. We have been working on this for some time and it is just great.”
