Gary Gibson crowned Irish Motocross champion

CHAMPION: Gary Gibson

CHAMPION: Gary Gibson

As expected Gary Gibson is the new Irish premier motocross champion.

The 24-year-old Ballygowan rider won the final round at Clonroche, Co Wexford to inherit his first major title.

Gibson ended the eight-round Retink backed championship with 510 points followed by Dubliner Michael Mahon (462) and Wayne Garrett who missed the last two rounds due to injury in third place on 373.

At the Wexford meeting Gibson beat Mahon in the opening race by 12 seconds but in the second outing that margin was reduced to eight seconds.

When it came to the third race it was Mahon’s turn to come out on top and he did it in style. Mahon managed a 17-second winning margin over Gibson.

Running concurrently with the MX1 class was the MX2 category won by Glen McCormick from Carrickfergus.

Second was Loughbrickland’s John Meara who is the new MX2 champion.
