Michael Dunlop was the fastest of the Honda TT Legends riders during opening qualifying on Thursday for this weekend’s Le Mans 24 Hours race on his first ever visit to the French circuit.
Dunlop lapped in 1m 39.486s, although his times did not count towards the team’s final qualifying position of provisional eighth as the Ulsterman was listed as the fourth rider.
The times set by John McGuinness, Michael Rutter and Simon Andrews counted towards the Honda squad’s day one average of 1m 39.794s, with only 0.1s preventing the team from securing a top five position.
Dunlop, winner of the Scarborough Gold Cup last weekend, said: “It’s been a good day for the team overall as we achieved what we set out to achieve. I’m learning the track and we’re making good progress with the bike.
“We just need to find a bit more tomorrow to get a bit higher on the time-sheet.”
Team boss Neil Tuxworth added: “The riders did well today and it’s good to have them all so close to each other in lap times. The whole team is upbeat and determined to return a good result.”
