French rider Franck Petricola (31) is in a ‘serious but stable condition’ following a crash during practice for the Superstock class at the Vauxhall International North West 200 on Tuesday.

A newcomer to the event, Mr Petricola was riding for the Ice Valley Racing Team on a BMW machine.

The accident occurred at Primrose corner and he was treated at the scene for some time before being airlifted to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

He is currently being looked after in the intensive care unit at the RVH, but his injuries are said to be ‘non-life threatening’.

Only a few minutes of the Superstock session remained when the crash happened and the red flags were deployed immediately, bringing an end to the action on Tuesday.
