MOTORSPORT: Wayne Boyd enjoys superb start in European Le Mans Series

Wayne Boyd enjoyed a superb start to the European Le Mans Series but there was further frustration for Colin Turkington in British Touring Cars.

Boyd claimed second in the LMP3 class in the opening round of the ELMS atSilverstone at the wheel of a United Autosports Ligier.

He was sharing the car with Matt Bell and Mark Patterson with the other team car crewed by Alex Brundle, Christian England and Mike Gausch taking the class win.

Meanwhile, it was another difficult weekend for Turkington in the British Touring Car Championship.

The Portadown driver qualified his Subaru 11th at Donington and his best result came in race one where he finished 10th. Race two was a non-finish and race he finished back in 18th.

Carrickfergus driver Chris Smiley had a bestresult of 17th in the final race as he continues to progress in his first season in British Touring Cars.

Meanwhile, Jackie Cochrane took two race wins with his Sunbeam Tiger in Historics at Mondello Park, while Noel Robinson finished runner-up in both BOSS Ireland races to film stunt driver Jonathan Fildes (Ralt).

Robinson will defend his lead in the Northern Ireland Formula Ford Championship at Kirkistown next Saturday when he steps into his Van Diemen.

Elsewhere on the rallying scene, Desi Henry at the wheel of a Skoda won the Moonraker Rally round two of the Valvoline Motorsport Ireland National Forestry Rally Championship.

And after featuring among the frontrunners in the opening two rounds of the 2016 FIA World Rally Championship, the Abu Dhabi Total World Rally Team has confirmed it will be competing at Rally de Portugal (19-22 May) and Rally Poland (1-3 July).

After taking part in the Rallye Monte-Carlo and then Rally Sweden, the team took a break from the WRC during its American leg.

Three cars have been entered at Rally de Portugal for Kris Meeke/Paul Nagle, Stephane Lefebvre/Gabin Moreau and Khalid Al-Qassimi/Chris Patterson.

Six weeks after Portugal, the team’s WRC programme will continue on the gravel stages of Rally Poland. This time, two cars will be entered for Stephane Lefebvre/Gabin Moreau and Circuit of Ireland winner Craig Breen/Scott Martin.
