North West produced an incredible revival to pinch a place in the quarter finals of the IIBA Women’s Inter-zone Championship at the weekend.
They were staring down the barrel of an embarrassing home defeat by Mid Tyrone at Limavady, trailing by 18 shots at the interval, but somehow managed to squeeze into a last eight meeting with Mid Ulster early next month.
Caroline McCrossan was Mid Tyrone’s top performer in the first half, skipping her rink to a stunning 21-3 win over Dessa Baird. North West hung in on the two other mats with Phyliss McCann and Mary Douglas battling out draws against Wendy Sterritt (10-10) and Hazel McGlone (7-7).
But the home team put the foot on the gas in the second half with Karen McDevitt turning the game on its head with a superb 19-5 victory over Jean McKee.
Fiona McDermott and Freda Hunt sent the match into an extra end with wins against Jill Henderson (9-6) and Virginia Fox (9-8).
It was left to McDevitt to claim victory by grabbing the winner on the extra end.
Meanwhile, Alan Paul and Clarke Hill triumphed in the popular Loughaghery Presbyterian pairs tournament, beating Glen Smith and Damien McElroy 10-6 in an all-Mid-Ulster final.
The victory was made that little bit sweeter for Paul because it was one of the few competitions he had never won.
Other section winners were Seamus McGlinchey, Michael Beattie, Darren Witherspoon, and Mark Wilson.
