OLYMPIC BOXING: Twitter explodes after Michael Conlan exits Rio games

Many boxing stars have come out in support of Ieland's Michael Conlan after he was knocked out of the Rio Games on Tuesday.

The Belfast fighter lost to a controversial points decision to Russia’s Vladimir Nikitin and Conlan is receiving support on Twitter from all sides of the boxing community as the world reacts to his defeat in Brazil.

WBA World champion Carl Frampton MBE expressed his disgust.

“Sacrifice everything only for your dreams to be shattered by corruption. These judges won’t even lose a wink of sleep either. Shameful”

And former World champion Bernard Dunne also commented.

“You sacrifice all your life for a dream and then have a bunch of bandits snatch it away from you. Conlan was clear winner #Rio2016”

And fellow Irish Olympic boxer from Belfast Brendan Irvine said:

“Just shows you how corrupt amateur boxing is @mickconlan11 boxed the head of his opponent and the judges robbed him absolute disgrace.”

And Olympic gold medal winner at London 2012 John Joe Joyce was also not happy with the result.

“So many bad decisions in the Olympics! have to give the 2 worst I have seen is @mickconlan11 and @KatieTaylor true legends to the sport.”

And former pound for pound king Sergio Martinez was also disappointed with the scoring of the judges.

“Feeling very bad for a true terrific fighter @mickconlan11, another robbery, one more from these thieves.”

And former World champion Paul Malignaggiw as also convinced that Conlan won the encounter.

“You’ve got a bright future @mickconlan11 the world knows you deserved that decision, you will laugh last with success in your professional career,” he said on Twitter.

Callum Smith added: “Gutted to hear about the @mickconlan11 result. Genuine gold medal hope & had his dream shattered by bad scoring.” added Smith.
