The 25th SPAR Omagh Half Marathon and 5k Fun Run has been launched with organisers hoping for another record breaking year.
Over 2,600 runners took to the streets of Omagh last year, to walk or run the 13 mile route and this year’s event on Saturday, March 29, is anticipated to attract even more runners than ever before.
Preparations are at an advanced stage for this year’s marathon event which is now regarded as one of the most prestigious events in Ireland and the UK.
In fact, runners travel from all over Ireland as well as some overseas participants due to the quality and stature of the Omagh Half Marathon.
The organising committee are planning something special to mark their Silver Jubilee and have produced a commemorative booklet to capture interesting photographs and stories of the race.
Race Director Michael Ward explained: “Our event appeals to runners and walkers of all levels and we hope to have a greater schools participation this year to mark our Silver Jubilee.
“There will be £5,000 in prize money up for grabs and we will be encouraging people to dress up and add to the carnival atmosphere.”
The Omagh Half Marathon brings both fun and excitement to the community of Omagh every year and you don’t have to be a seasoned runner to take part, as the 5k run and walk offers a great alternative; making it a perfect for all ages, sizes and fitness levels.
It also raises much needed funds for extremely worthwhile charities, such as the Omagh area’s Down Syndrome society which is this years recognised charity.
All runners in the Half Marathon must pre-enter by 22 March while 5K participants can register in advance or on race day.
Entries have now opened online at www.athleticsni.org and it is recommended to enter early to guarantee participation. Those who enter early will be automatically entered into a draw for a 32 inch television.
On the day there will be on street entertainment creating a real buzz – a perfect family day!
