Oriel prove too strong for North Down in semi-final

Armagh's Mark Sproule

Oriel marched into the final of the IIBA Men’s Inter-zone final following an impressive 61-47 victory over North Down at Corduff.

It will be Oriel’s fourth final appearance – and they’ll be hoping for a change of theme when they face Armagh on February 23.

The last time the zones met in the showcase decider was back in the 2003-04 season, with Armagh winning that occasion.

Oriel got their hands on the Boomer Cup for the first time the following year, following a victory over Mid Tyrone.

However, Mid Ulster zapped hopes of an Oriel repeat success 12 months ago when they cruised to victory a record breaking 10th cup success

“We were determined to get back into the final,” said Oriel’s Gerry O’Hare.

“We have bad memories from that defeat by Mid Ulster last year.

“Now we face the side that beat us in our very first final appearance, Armagh. It would be nice to turn the tables.

“Ironically, both zones will also meet in the ladies final on February, so that will put on a little bit of added pressure.

“We played well against a good North Down side.

“They are very much like ourselves. They are quite a young side. I’m sure they’ll be back.

“Once we established ourselves on the game, we maintained a 12 shots lead throughout the match. We’ll now prepare for another battle against Armagh.”
