Board set to complete interview process
FORMER Waterford hurling boss Justin McCarthy will become the final candidate to be interviewed for the vacant Limerick hurling manager's position within the next 48 hours.
The committee charged with recommending the new hurling manager has already met with the five other candidates who are in contention to fill the vacancy: Richie Bennis, Tony Considine, Pat Herbert, Gerry Molyneaux and Eddie Murphy.
The committee's meeting with high-profile McCarthy was delayed because the Cork native has been on holidays.
As a player Justin McCarthy enjoyed a distinguished inter-county career with Cork, winning All-Ireland, Munster, National Hurling League and Railway Cup titles.
Over the last four decades he has enjoyed success as a manager.
In the 1970s McCarthy coached Antrim to an All-Ireland title at intermediate level before capturing back-to-back National Hurling League titles with Clare. The 1980s saw McCarthy coach his own native Cork to two Munster titles and an All-Ireland triumph in the GAA's Centenary Year. While in charge of the Waterford senior hurling team (2001-2008) he guided the Deise to three Munster titles and one National Hurling League title.
McCarthy was first linked to the Limerick manager's job having been nominated to fill the position by Camogue Rovers. However, he insisted he didn't know anything about his nomination at the time.
Once McCarthy's interview is complete, the seven-man selection committee, comprising of Limerick GAA chairman, Liam Lenihan, secretary Mike O'Riordan, treasurer Owen Hayes and one club delegate from each of the county's four divisions- Oliver Mann (Patrickswell), Louis Quirke (Ahane), Jim Dooley (Garryspillane) and Jimmy Stapleton (Granagh-Ballingarry), will decide upon their preferred choice for the position.
The selection committee appear on course to propose an individual to delegates at the next full County Board meeting on October 14. Delegates will then decide whether to accept their recommendation.
It is possible, but appears unlikely, that the committee will be in a position to make a recommendation to the delegates at next Tuesday night's special County Board meeting which will consider the 'Lifting the Treaty - Building A New Future' proposals.
The selection committee are looking to nominate a candidate for a two-year period.
It is understood that the new manager will be asked to bring two selectors on board.
Meanwhile out-going Limerick football manager Mickey Ned O'Sullivan remains the hot favourite to be appointed to the vacant position.
O'Sullivan has been holding discussions with representatives of the Football Board and it is understood that the parties were close to reaching an agreement this Wednesday.
Open Draw
The Munster Council has decided to re-introduce the open draw system for next year's senior provincial football championship. Players in Limerick, Tipperary, Clare and Waterford re-acted angrily when a seeded system which kept Cork and Kerry on opposite sides of the draw was introduced for this year's Munster championship.
Indeed, Limerick players were so incensed by the decision that they boycotted the provincial squad for the M Donnelly Inter-provincial series.
