Derry champions

OWEN Roe senior camogie side lifted their second Derry Intermediate title in three years when they defeated local rivals Glenullin 4-10 to 1-3 at Ballinascreen last Sunday afternoon.

While the Coleraine side fully deserved their win it was only in the last quarter that they pulled away. A gallant Glenullin side was still in the hunt 15 minutes into the second half when they were just five adrift at 1-7 to 1-2.

However Owen Roe finished very strongly hitting 1-2 in a two minute spell going into the third quarter and then a two goal blast in the last minute to finish comfortable 16 point winners. Certainly goals win games and that was very much the case in this final.

The Coleraine defence was very strong throughout, goalkeeper Roma McDonald making a couple of fine saves while through the middle Orlagh Mullan at full back and Jane Carey at centre half put in storming performances.

Only once did the Glenullin attack breach the centre of the Owen Roe defence, for their goal in the 12th minute of the second half, when they briefly threatened to stage a comeback. Glenullin could not contain the scoring power of the McGoldrick sisters Grainne and Meabh who finished with 1-10 between them while the goals from Adele Archibald (2) and Pamela Frizelle ensured the title would return to Coleraine.

The opening quarter was dominated by the respective defences as neither side could make any real headway. After the sides traded wides Grainne McGoldrick put Owen Roe ahead from a ‘45’ in the fifth minute. Glenullin then failed to make the most of a couple of long range efforts before good work by Niamh Archibald put Meabh McGoldrick in for Coleraine’s first goal in the 14th minute.

Owen Roe went on to dominate the second quarter as Orlagh Mullan and Jane Carey thwarted a number of Glenullin raids through the centre. Coleraine scored five unanswered points in that second quarter, Meabh and Grainne McGoldrick sharing the scoring honours.

Early in the second half the sides traded points before a brave block by Orlagh Mullan saved a certain goal, Glenullin sending the resultant ‘45’ wide. A super solo run and a finish to match from Grainne McGoldrick had Owen Roe ahead 1-7 to 0-2 12 minutes into the second half.

Glenullin then threaten a comeback as Aileen McIvaar goaled from close range to reduce the gap to five midway through the half. Moments after that goal a long range effort from Michelle Comer for a point went just the wrong side of the post.

Coleraine got back on track with a Grainne McGoldrick point and then 17 minutes in midfielder Sinead Boyle sent in a long ball which was seized on by Pamela Frizelle to find the net. Then Meabh McGoldrick quickly added a point and any brief hopes of a Glenullin comeback were shattered as the rampant Roes led by ten points.

The Coleraine defence continued to block and chase as Maeve Dillon, Frances Frizelle and Geraldine O’Neill all made telling tackles to hold Glenullin scoreless over the final quarter. Meanwhile Grainne McGoldrick swept over a point from a free and in the final minute the coup de grace was applied by a two goal salvo from Adelle Archibald. Owen Roe were worthy winners as captain Jane Carey lifted the championship trophy for a fine team performance.
