Eoghan Rua far from comfortable
WHEN Eoghan Rua aced into a 0-4 to nil lead after just four minutes of this first round James O'Hagan Cup game against Faughanvale at the University grounds last Sunday it seemed the senior side were going to be in for a comfortable afternoon against their intermediate opponents.
While Eoghan Rua did go on to win 0-19 to 1-10 it was a far from comfortable victory. Midway through the first half Faughanvale pegged Coleraine back to two points, 0-5 to 0-3, but the winners rattled over six unanswered points from the 20th minute to lead 0-13 to 0-4 at the break. Martin McGonigle and Barry McGoldrick did most of the damage on the scoring front for Coleraine while Joe Gray kept Faughanvales' scoring ticking over mainly from frees.
Eoghan Rua seemed to take the foot off the gas in the second half and paid the price to some extent as they actually lost the second thirty minutes 1-6 to 0-6, fortunately fro them theyhad built up a sufficient gap in that first half.
Indeed when Gray goaled five minutes from time there was only five points between the sides and a point from a Joe Gray free caused a few anxious moments for the Coleraine management over the last couple of minutes. Two late points from Ciaran Lagan and a booming effort from Barry McGoldrick gave Eoghan Rua a winning margin that their first half display deserved.
