Frampton is far from impressed with Quigg

CARL Frampton was an interested spectator as Scott Quigg retained his British super-bantamweight title on Saturday night.

The highly rated Quigg, however, had to drag himself off the canvas in the fourth round before seeing of the gallant Jamie Arthur.

The Bury prospect struggled to impress in Bolton, finding himself on the floor after being caught by a left hook.

To his credit, Quigg shook off the knockdown and survived the set-back.

Having fully recovered by the fifth round, the unbeaten champion asserted himself from then on.

A cut opened up near Arthur’s right eye in the seventh and, early in the eighth, referee Mark Green stopped it as the challenger seemed troubled by a body shot.

Frampton – who defended his Commonwealth title against Kris Hughes at the York Hall at the end of January – believes Quigg was hurt when he was dropped in the fourth round.

“He was hurt and he did well to recover,” Frampton said.

“Arthur is not the biggest puncher in the world and he dropped Quigg with what looked like a jab.

“Maybe Quigg is a wee bit chinny, but he came back into the fight and won it in the end.”

And the Tigers Bay fighter believes the referee was maybe a wee bit hasty in stopping the fight.

“The referee jumped in far to early. Alright, Quigg could have been on his way to victory, but we will never know.

“If the referee thought he Arthur was hurt, he should have at least given him a standing count, but he just waved the fight off.

“It was a crazy decision and when the fight was stopped I had the two of them level on my scorecard.

“Quigg would probably have gone on to win the fight – but we will never know if Arthur could have turned it back in his favour,” added Frampton.

After the fight Quigg – now unbeaten in his 25 fights said: “He caught me square on with a flash knockdown, I got up and kept my composure.

“If he feels disappointed about the result I’d gladly give him a rematch otherwise we’ll have to sit down and see what options there are.”

Frampton will now go on to defend his Commonwealth title in Sheffield on St Patrick’s Day and he is looking forward to the challenge.

“It is good to be out again so soon after defending my title at the York Hall. I am the chief support to Matthew Hatton against Kell Brook.

“It is live on Sky Television and the venue in Sheffield holds 10,000 so there should be a good atmosphere.”
