Giants dig deep to beat Clan
THE Belfast Giants increased their lead at the top of the Elite League to seven points after picking up a hard fought road win over the Braehead Clan last night.
There was nothing to separate the two sides after regulation and overtime and it went all the way to sudden death in penalty shots before Doug Christiansen’s side eventually claimed a vital win.
After a scoreless opening 20 minutes the Giants took the lead early in the second period with Aaron Clarke grabbing his eighth goal of the season.
They weren’t ahead for long as defenceman Drew Bannister equalized on the powerplay.
The Clan went 2-1 in front when Mike Wirll scored at 45:46 but it was soon 2-2 when Paul Deniset notched his first goal since returning to the Giants earlier this month.
The Giants would go on to out-shoot the Clan 37-18 but couldn’t find the game-winning goal and so it went to penalties.
Craig Peacock scored with the Giants third shot only to watch as Jordan Krestanovich levelled matters again with the final effort for the home team.
So it went to sudden death and after Jeff Mason and Jade Galbraith both scored for their respective teams Robert Dowd also found the back of the net with the Giants fifth shot and Wirll then missed to hand the Giants the victory.
The win ended a mini two-game losing streak and tonight the Giants will look to make it a weekend double when they finish their road trip with a clash against the league’s bottom club, Fife Flyers.
“Fife have signed a couple of new players recently and in my opinion have added by subtracting,” explained Christiansen.
“Suddenly a recent win over Braehead means they’re back in contention for a place in the end of season play-offs so they have something to play for.
“This will be our third game in five nights so we have to be fully focused on what we want to achieve. We’ll pay Fife respect because the last time we met they led 1-0 for a lot of the game before we came through 3-1. We expect a tough challenge.”
