The Belfast Giants continue their road trip with an Elite League clash against the Braehead Clan tonight with coach Doug Christiansen hoping his players can halt a mini two game losing streak.
The league defeat to Nottingham last Saturday was followed by the midweek Challenge Cup defeat in Cardiff although the 2-1 score line means the Giants are still very much in contention for a place in the final when the home leg of the semi-final at the Odyssey rolls around next Saturday night.
“Robert Dowd’s goal for us in Cardiff was massive and gives us a chance to achieve what we set out to do and that’s reach the final.
“We want to win our home game next week because it doubles up as a league game so we want the two points in the chase for the title and we want to make the final.
“Of course we’re disappointed that we lost in Cardiff but it still gives us a terrific opportunity to advance in what should be a great game at the Odyssey,” explained Christiansen.”
“The last couple of games have been close but they haven’t gone the way we wanted them to but there’s been a lot in them for us to learn from.
“We’re a good team but we aren’t good enough to make some mistakes and allow teams easy goals.
“But since Wednesday night we had a great team meeting and everyone is looking forward to the challenge of the last seventeen games of the title chase.”
In the meantime the Giants still have a five-point lead at the top of the standings to protect and hopefully increase although the Clan will be no pushovers.
“Braehead have such a talented group of forwards that it’s impossible not to respect them and they are clinical in their finishing and their offence is loaded.
“They are solid defensively but the one thing they lack is depth.
“And that’s something we have a little more of but we’re going to have to get all over them and take the game to them.”
