BRIAN Magee is on the verge of something big when he defends his WBA Interim World title in Denmark on February 18.

The Lisburn southpaw takes on the hard-hitting Rudy Markussen in Brondby knowing that victory will propel him into the big time.

Super fights against Andre Ward, Mikkel Kessler, Carl Froch to name but a few are all a possibility as long as Magee beats Markussen.

Magee’s manager, Pat Magee insists a lot is riding on the fight in Denmark.

“We are sure that if Brian beats Markussen, he will then get a unification fight against WBA World Champion Karoly Balzsay.

“The WBA will call for that fight within 90 days.

“That would be a great fight for Brian and if he wins that he would have the pick of the world’s super-middleweights.

“We are looking at that unification fight against Balzsay to take place around June.

“The fight would have to in June because the rest of the summer is packed with sport – like the Olympics.

“We are then looking for a major fight for Brian at the end of the year. And there are big names looming

“There are the two Dirrell brothers, Kelly Pavlik, and Froch now that he has no belt,

“There is Kessler and there is Ward, so Brian is in a great position at the minute and he is on the verge of something big,” he added.

But Magee insists his fighter is totally focused on Markussen.

“We are totally focused on Markussen and we know that will be a tough fight, but we are very confident that Brian will win it,

“And when Brian beats Markussen, as I am sure he will, the Danes will start to think that one of their guys has to beat the Irish guy, so Kessler could step forward.

“That is one of our fights that we are looking for but there are loads of options.

“There are loads of big names out there like Ward etc and all Brian has to do is keep winning and he will be in the mix. Those are all big money fights.” he added.

And Magee is glad his fighter is going back to Denmark for his title defence.

“It is a happy hunting ground for Brian. He beat Mads Larsen there for the European title, so we have happy memories.

“But we have to be careful as Markussen is a danger man.

“He is on the unwanted list, because no-one wants to fight him.

“He is a suitable opponent for Brian at this stage and he wants to go back to Denmark.

“And Brian is a professional fighter and you have to go where the money is and we are getting well paid to go to Denmark and Brian likes fighting there.

“It’s really a no brainier. Why fight at home against a dangerous fighter for less money?” he added.

Meanwhile Martin Lindsay is hoping to get news of a fight within the next few days.

The former British featherweight champion has been out of action since December 2010. Lindsay was been undefeated up until that clash with John Simpson and hopefully ‘Mac Man’ gets the green light to get back into the ring
