It was just about the perfect weekend for the Belfast Giants.
After beating the Cardiff Devils 4-1 on Saturday night to reach the Challenge Cup final and clinch a league victory at the same time they rallied in the third period of last night’s top of the table clash against the Sheffield Steelers with two goals to record a 4-2 win that could be pivotal moment in the chase for the Elite League title.
The face-off was delayed by almost two hours as the Giants flew into the snow covered Midlands yesterday so it was by no means ideal preparations as they stepped off the bus and straight onto the ice.
They found themselves trailing to a Luke Fulghum goal at the end of the first twenty minutes but Robert Dowd equalized early in the second period.
Colt King restored the home team’s lead with the man advantage but with thirteen seconds left before the second intermission Jeff Mason replied with a powerplay marker of his own.
The Giants were still on the powerplay in the early minutes of the final period when Jon Pelle scored his 17th of the season and seconds later Mike Hoffman notched his first since rejoining the club last week.
In all the Giants scored three goals in the space of 2.34 of actual playing time and that was all they needed.
With Nottingham’s game postponed the gap to the Giants at the top of the table increased to seven points with Doug Christiansen’s side having played a game more while the Steelers are nine points adrift but with six games in hand.
On Saturday night the game with the Cardiff Devils doubled up as a league clash and second leg of the Challenge Cup semi-final in which the Giants trailed by a goal from the first game in Cardiff. The Giants won 4-1 (5-3 on aggregate in the cup) to claim a ‘double’ victory.
