replay defeat for holders Glenullin
REIGNING county senior football champions Glenullin lost their grip on the title when they were beaten by a single point, 0-15 to 2-8, by local rivals Slaughtneil in a mid-week quarter-final replay in Celtic Park.
Once again there was very little between the sides as it took a point from a Paul Bradley free some 30 seconds into added time to put Slaughtneil through to a semi-final place against Ballinascreen. A
t the end of the opening quarter, Glenullin led 0-3 to 0-1, Paddy Bradley and Jim Kelly from a free sharing the first two points, then Eoin Bradley and Ruairi Boylan putting the Mitchel's two ahead. Slaughtneil then enjoyed a good spell with points from Paul Bradley and Jim Kelly (2), all from frees.
Glenullin went back into the lead, 0-5 to 0-4, with points from Donal Boylan and Eoin Bradley six minutes from half-time. Glenullin then went further ahead in the 25th minute when Eoin Bradley was pulled down by McEldowney, Gerard O'Kane stepped up to tuck the ball into the corner of the net to give Glenullin a 1-5 to 0-4 lead.
The sides then exchanged two points each as Glenullin went in at the break 1-7 to 0-6 ahead. Slaughtneil enjoyed the better of the early exchanhes on the restart and were level ten minutes in.
Then came a bizarre moment when Francis McEldowney's carried the ball over his own line for a Glenullin goal which had them back in front 2-7 to 0-10. Once again Slaughtneil showed their battling qualities as Paul Bradley and Jim Kelly swung over points to level matters going into added time.
It was the accuracy from frees by Paul Bradley that eventually won this tie, he landed his sixth point of the game in dramatic fashion in added time to secure victory. Jim Kelly top-scored for the winners with a fine personal tally of 0-7, six from frees.
For Glenullin Eoin Bradley hit four points but his brother Paddy who was clearly hampered by an injury was restricted to two points. Slaughtneil will play Ballinascreen in the semi-finals with Ballinderry taking on Dungiven in the other last-four clash.
