Slaughtmanus prove too strong

A much more experienced Slaughtmanus reserve side proved too strong for Eoghan Rua, Coleraine's second string as they stormed back in the second half to win 1-9 to 1-5 in this Neil Carlin Cup quarter-final tie last Saturday afternoon.

Eoghan Rua,, with the aid of the wind, enjoyed a narrow 1-5 to 0-4 lead at the break, it never looked enough particularly when the home side goaled two minutes into the second half to level matters.

Despite a strong rearguard action by the Coleraine defence in the second half Slaughtmanus ground out the win to reach the semi-final with a series of unanswered points following their crucial equalising goal.

The home side took the lead with a 10th minute Shane O'Connor point and despite having the aid of a strong downfield wind in their favour it was only in the 13th minute that Eoghan Rua equalised through Colm McGoldrick.

Prior to that Coleraine had spurned a couple of scoring chances. Two points from Conor Carey, one from a free had Coleraine ahead by the 17th minute and then three minutes later Eoghan Rua found the net.

A quickly taken Pat Cassidy free found Colm McGoldrick completely unmarked, his initial shot was well saved by but McGoldrick palmed the rebound to the net.

The home side responded well to that goal with two points in the space of three minutes from Ryan Barr and Damian Harkin. Eoin McWilliams then blasted over a fine point for Eoghan Rua before Shane O'Connor kept Slaughtmanus well in contention with a pointed free.

On the stroke of half-time Conor Carey gave Coleraine a four point cushion 1-5 to 0-4.

Within two minutes of the restart Slaughtmanus were level, a point was followed by a fisted goal from Martin O'Connor. By the end of the third quarter the home side had moved into a three point lead, as Shane O'Connor (2) and Martin O'Connor swung over frees.

Coleraine were making little headway around midfield as their defence was coming under constant pressure. The home side confirmed victory with late points from marin O'Connor and P J Magee.
